     : 2014 Director's Welcome (987 Reads)
Bluebonnet Brew-off   Welcome to the 28th Annual Bluebonnet Brew-off!

Beware! “Just Dave” Girard and the Knights of the Brown Bottle take the lead for this year's event. Quite simply, the Bluebonnet Brew-Off has become the World's Largest Single Site Homebrew Competition because of the dedication and collaborative efforts of 4 DFW area homebrew clubs over the past two decades. In addition to KOBB, representatives from the North Texas Homebrewers Association, The Cap and Hare Homebrew Club and the Red River Brewers form the Bluebonnet Brew-Off (BBO) Committee.

Our 1st goals were to be larger than the grand daddy Dixie Cup Competition in Houston, then to regularly surpass 1,000 entries and finally to become the World's largest ever single site homebrew Competition. Due to the efforts of the BBO's Committee, we've achieved those goals while providing You with a World-Class Competition and Awards Ceremony Event!

We are adding a number of Events and Activities in 2014. In addition to our traditional keynote speaker on Friday Night (we're honored to be host to Eric Warner of Karbach Brewing Co. this year), we will add a People's Choice Homebrew Competition following the Commercial Tasting. This competition is designed to recognize and reward the top three Clubs that entered the best quality beers, as brought, presented and judged, at the competition. All event guests will be able to vote for their favorite Club homebrews on Friday night.

We are adding additional educational and guest speaker presentations on Saturday to our line-up. As always, Brad and Jamison wish to escort you and your friends to the areas best watering holes with our famous Pub Crawl. Participants are driven by bus to pubs of the route directors choice. Sign up on-line for the Pub Crawl with your event registration. We expect everyone will have a great time and enjoy the Pub Crawl outing.

This years Awards Ceremony will once again be held at the Westin DFW North, located at Hwy 114 & Esters Blvd. in Irving TX. We do have a room commitment that we must make so when making your reservations, please call 888–627-8617 and ask for the Bluebonnet Brew-off rate, which is a discounted $94 per night. You can also make your reservations online via the competition web at BLUEBONNET BREW-OFF which will track this automatically.

The Bluebonnet Brew-Off Committee looks forward to judging your entries, assisting in the People's Choice Competition and honoring the winners during the Awards Ceremony. We look forward to Your participation in the World's Greatest Homebrew Competition.

     : 2014 Keynote Speaker (506 Reads)
      Bluebonnet Brew-off   Eric Warner

Born and raised in Denver, CO., Eric Warner successfully completed a degree in German Studies at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR, before pursuing a formal education in Brewing Science in Germany.  After three years of extensive brewery, lab and course work, Eric was awarded the degree ‘Diplom-Braumeister’ from the Technical University of Munich at Weihenstephan.

Author of German Wheat Beer, a Classic Beer Style Series book,  Eric worked in the US and in Europe at several breweries and visited scores of others.  Most notably he worked at Brewery Widmann and Hofbrauhaus Moy, both in the Munich area and at Denver’s famed Wynkoop Brewing Co.

Eric Warner was at the well-regarded Flying Dog Brewery in Colorado for a decade, as brewmaster and then as chief executive. While there, the brewery came out with award winning beers such as Snake Dog IPA, Double Dog double pale ale, Gonzo Imperial Porter and Dogtoberfest Märzen.

By the time Flying Dog moved production to Maryland and Warner left the company in 2008, Flying Dog was a national brand with annual production of 50,000 barrels, up from 10,000 when he started.

In April, 2010, Eric brought his talent, a quarter-century's brewing experience and his interest in start-ups to Houston as the head Brewmeister of Karbach Brewing Co.

The 28th Annual Bluebonnet Brew-Off is pleased to add Eric to its long line of Nationally known and respected Keynote Speakers.

Looking forward to seeing you Burner!

     : 28th Annual Bluebonnet Brew-off is underway (2582 Reads)
Bluebonnet Brew-off   The Bluebonnet is pleased to welcome Gary Glass, the Director of the American Homebrewer's Association, to our 28th Annual Event.

Gary’s been homebrewing since 1992. Gary also enjoys fly fishing, hiking, backpacking and working on home improvement projects. Gary is extremely fortunate that his wife Erin shares his passion for beer.

This year Gary will enlighten us on the current state of homebrew laws and provide feedback on how YOU can help Texas continue to expand the State's “beer laws”. Great progress has been made over the last 5 years but there is so much more that we can accomplish – together.

To enlighten all on the importance of the effort, please note this taken from a recent interview:

“Legally speaking, there are still a number of states where there are issues that can be resolved on the legislative front. Just this past year, Iowa passed a law allowing for transport of homebrew outside of the home. Previously it was technically not legal to remove homebrew from your home. And that’s not uncommon for many states to pass homebrew laws in the wake of the repeal of Prohibition. Those laws tend to be much more restrictive or narrow, simply because of the timing in which they were passed. In 1933, there were no homebrew clubs or homebrew competitions, and so there wasn’t a need to write [these issues] into those laws. We’re finding situations where homebrewers are wanting to participate in entering homebrew competitions and other activities that require removal of homebrew from the home and so in those states where it is not yet legal to do that, we’ve been working to change those laws.”

Please join us at the 28th Annual BBO to Welcome Gary properly to Texas.
